Leeks 4

The leeks share the asparagus raised bed, as yet we have not had a good return on the asparagus, in fact we have not eaten any of it. We are going to give it another year and then probably take it out. Last year we planted the leeks in the bed and they did really well, so today as they were ready I planted this years leeks out, fingers crossed they grow as well as last years!
The weather here this morning was truly stunning at 0500h, I was up and about making a cup of tea as Graham had a very bad coughing attack. The sky was a deep blue and the rising sun was on the mountains, Ruaridh was awake had a run around the garden then dived into our bed! we all settled down and after the tea went to sleep!
After breakfast and tidying around, Graham decided he would go down to the beach for a walk, went to the village for the papers then a quick walk. Ruaridh appears to love swimming now and stands at the ocean edge and waits for us to skim stones on the sea (or attempt to), then rushes into the water to find them and swims like crazy!
Home had lunch then the rains came down!
Dinner- Aubergine parmigiano, linguine, green salad followed by scotch pancakes!
Did some knitting going to have a cup of tea, then bed. Goodnight.

Barter

Today was my turn to do the work in exchange for work done for us. When we were in Edinburgh a few weeks ago John H looked after our greenhouse for us. He and his wife are away on holiday and although his mum-in-law is looking after the house for them them, she required help to do the change over at The Lodge the place they rent out. I went down about 1130h and it took me about an hour and a half to do what was required. Sheila is a lovely lady and I enjoyed meeting her. Got a telephone call from her this afternoon to say she could not lock the door of The Lodge, and would I go down, I was busy but explained how to do it, if not successful to give me a phone!
Graham took Ruaridh to the Brochs to do a Time Lapse picked me up, back home lunch! Then I started to do the strimming, as G not very well bad cold and chest.
Layla telephoned to say Bella had been upset when she saw her mum use the hairdryer, bless her. They had a lovely time at Onya's birthday lunch, Happy Birthday Onya!
Went down to lock the door for Sheila as she could not manage. Looked like it was the village schools Sports Day!
Risotto frittata, roast potatoes and broad beans for dinner, lovely. Done a little knitting of a jumper for Bella. Now to bed. Goodnight.

On the way there saw these wooden houses decided to go along the single track road and investigate. So glad we did houses OK, and found this superb beach, can't believe in all the years of coming to The Misty Isle we haven't seen it before. Ruaridh loved it and had a great run about. Took some great photographs!
Went to the Co-op did a great shop and got a new punnet of strawberries and my money back, for the rotten ones bought last week. At the checkout forgot to keep the strawberries back, so a bit of hassle, apologised to the woman behind me, who turned out to be Claire Macdonald see blipfoto.com/A Dog's Dinner a woman who runs a cookery school on Skye!!

Weight up.

The wee Sparky was weighed today, she refused to lie down on the clinic's weigh scale so the Health visitor let her sit up so that she could see what was happening-13ibs 9ozs was the weight, well done Bella. On the other side Layla is losing weight well done Layla!
Had heavy showers today, however managed to get a good walk in the woods whilst the sun shone, Ruaridh disappeared on numerous occasions for long periods, so tired now he sleeps on the sofa at my side. Did some good photographs today and enjoyed it, even though the midges were atrocious!

Done a little knitting, now going to wash the dishes, have a cup of tea then bed! Goodnight.

The Tatties

Realised almost too late that we had not hoed up the tatties, one of the reasons being lack of time! So today started with a vengeance to get this job done, as the tatties are in raised beds there was not enough soil to use from between the rows, so I had to use old turf that we had composting for a couple of years! hard work. Eventually managed to hoe up enough soil and compost to cover quite a lot of the green leaves, do hope it has the desired effect. The weather was warm and sunny, quite a few of the midgy b-----ds flying about, tried to ignore them. Graham worked in the greenhouse, potting up.
Had a light lunch, then took Ruaridh for a walk in the woods, he rushed off on numerous occasions to investigate the woods, Graham did a Time lapse, and we enjoyed our walk.
Back home I made scones which we had with a cup of tea, made dinner tomato sauce with pasta and green salad lovely.
Spoke to Layla, Bella blew raspberries at most of the people in Lidls, ah well!
Done a little knitting. Goodnight.

Miss Bella goes home!

After a super eight days the family had to leave for home around 1430h. Bella entertained us this morning with the amazing amount of noises she can now make. My favorite is when she blows a raspberry, and she thinks this is so funny so do I! She is a great wee eater now and even had some of a Scotch pancake (drop scone) we had for breakfast this morning she appeared to like it.
The house is very quiet and the Dog Pasha is roaming from the sofa to the sheepskin we bought him! Only Graham moi and the wee dog for dinner this evening, but we will see them all in about three weeks time, when we go south for a week.
Went down to the beach Graham did a lovely time lapse in a rock pool. We had a good walk on the beach and I just sat on a rock doing nothing but gaze out to sea!
Back home had a quick snack, hung out my washing did a neighbour blip! put more washing in.
Red pepper soup for dinner maybe followed by a sandwich of salmon from a tin!
Must try and do more knitting very lax when the family were here! Bye

Bella at the Beach

Today we decided to go to the beach as the weather was not too promising. After breakfast and showers we were ready to zoom off to the beach. First we went to the village shop to get the messages that we required and then to the beach. It was very quiet today, yesterday it had been busier as a crowd of school children were having a great time on the shore and in the ocean! Ruaridh appeared to enjoy his walk, and walked the furthest he has for days, he did a little swimming but not much as Joe had Bella in her papoose, and could not threw the stones too well today! Graham did another time lapse.
Back home had a late lunch, and played and sang to Bella. I think she has enjoyed her first real holiday!
Graham made a lovely veggie risotto for dinner which we ate with delicious salads, and I made an apple crumble which we had with custard hmmm!
The family are leaving tomorrow for Edinburgh, we will miss them all and look forward to seeing them when next in Edinburgh.
It has been super seeing Bella over the week and I'm sure she has grown, she is such a wee star.
Must do some emails now. Goodnight

Garden table and bench!

Today dawned warm and sunny, I was up quite early 0800h to be precise! wow! made scones as we were expecting Jean & Luc over for afternoon tea! Made a second batch of scones when we returned from the beach, and Graham and Joe put the garden table and benches together, it looks great. Jean and Luc were expected around 1430h we waited for them getting hungrier and hungrier but they did not appear, waited until 1530h checked the telephone and the emails nothing. Decided to start the 'tea' without them, had a lovely one and Bella loved being outside. Just managed to finish our meal before the rains came down! Checked the telephone-message from Jean to ask where we were as they were expecting us over at there house Mix up or not ah well.
Had a lovely time at the beach Bella had her first paddle, and did not flinch! It was very hot and sunny. Ruaridh had a great time, he now loves swimming and was in the water for long periods, great for him.
Played with Bella she is really coming on, eating solids now and sitting up by herself for long periods, she laughs a lot and loves looking at things.
Had a lovely dinner this evening veggie sausage, and onion gravy, mashed tatties and garden peas, and a delicious rice pudding made by Layla. Suddenly very tired. Goodnight

Picnic

Today started off with lots of sun and warm, we were pleased as we had already planned to go to the beach near Duirnish, then onto Duncraig Nursery to look for some plants. Up quite late though, in fact could still have been in bed if an old colleague of Graham's had not telephoned and woken us up! Had breakfast then I made a soda bread to take with us. Packed all into the car and set off.
Good journey over, where we parked the car was lovely a big field full of wild flowers. When we arrived put Bella into her pram, and even though Rusridh was on his lead due to sheep and cattle being around, he enjoyed the walk to the beach. At the beach we let Ruaridh off his lead and he had great fun roaming. Bella ate all her lunch as did the wee dog, we took photo's, Layla took Ruaridh to the ocean and threw stones in for him, he loves his swims!
Just sat down to have a snack and coffee when the raindrops came, the wind dropped and the wee swines(the midges) arrived! We had to pack up in a hurry, poor wee Bella had just got sat on the rug! back to the car and the snacking continued in true Scots style balancing all on our knees huddled in the car with the rain lashing down.
Gave the nursery a miss, came home played with Bella, then she fell asleep as I sang 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' louder than she cried!
Joe with a little help from Layla made us a delicious Mexican meal thanks to both really enjoyed it.
Planting a Fairy seed and some Date seeds tonight as it is Midsummers Day! Goodnight.

Kintail Lodge Hotel

Tonight we were at The Kintail Lodge Hotel for dinner, as we all fancied fish and chips! we had first visited here about three years ago when the greenhouse had been erected. We treat everyone who helped as a thankyou. At that point the restaurant wasn't open as two woman had just bought the hotel and were starting to revamp the place, so we were in the bar. It was great and the food was delicious. Tonight I booked the restaurant as the family were going with us! quickly changed to the bar when we found out no fish and chips in the restaurant! we all enjoyed it and Bella was great! and Ruaridh stayed in the car and enjoyed it too.
Strange weather today dreich and drizzle this a.m. however we took Ruaridh into the woods and had a great walk, the family went to the Brochs in Glen Beag and took some great photographs. The sun came out and the weather suddenly became very hot? Then we got our country 'glad rags' on and went out for dinner.
Returned home Bella just having her nightcap then we will have some chocolate and red wine. Bye.

Baby Back Pack

Today Joe, Layla, Bella, Ruaridh and moi went down to the beach. Layla has bought this baby back pack on e-bay, she tried it out on Sunday but the straps wern't right, today she got it all organized and Bella appeared to enjoy her walk much better!
Before going down to the shore we went to the village shop to pick up the eggs, then we set off for the beach. The weather was not too bad very warm, but quite sultry. Graham decided not to come along due to his sore foot.
Layla, Bella and me had a great walk, along the shore trying to find the oystercatcher chicks needless to say no joy! Ruaridh decided to stay with Joe and had his photo taken many times!
Returned home had a nice lunch. Helped Layla make the dinner she made veggie curry, dhal and fried prawns, I did the Persian
rice and made nan breads. It was delicious!
Very tired in fact falling asleep sat on the sofa. Goodnight!
Photograph courtesy of Layla! Thanks!

Sheepskins

Today we decided to go to the Isle of Skye, to buy a sheepskin for Bella from Skyeskyns a company at Waternish an old haunt of ours. The weather was lovely sunny and warm and we had a great journey over! we went on the ferry from Glenelg which was a journey we first took about 29 years ago!
Arrived at the company and took the wee tour around, where they explained what happens to the skins from start to finish. Went upstairs to the shop and purchased a lovely white sheepskin for Bella, Ruaridh also got a treat as we bought a sheepskin for him. Back at the house Bella and Ruaridh both showed us how they loved their respective sheepskins, as they snuggled into them.
We then drove almost to the most westerly point of Waternish, where you look out to The Uists, Lewis and Harris, parked close by to the cemetry where a dear friend of ours who died quite young is buried, popped in to say hello. The weather was amazing sunny and hot and we had a lovely picnic at a picnic area that has been put there, Bella loved it as did we all, Ruaridh had a good roam around. Just finished our meal when it started to drizzle I took Ruaridh for a good run in a field full of buttercups which we really enjoyed! got wet feet haven't done this in years!
Left for Portree where we did our messages, got pizza's for dinner. Arrived home tired and happy, must say Bella the baby and Ruaridh the wee dog behaved so well no moans or groans from them!
Enjoyed our dinner and the red wine, tired now and so to bed. Goodnight.

Sorry no Blog yesterday!

Family arived safely on Friday evening good to see them! had a lovely dinner sat and chatted. Layla had forgotten the 'Nappy Bucket" so I found one put the nappies in, attempted to run the cold water in no cold water, the pressure on the pump had gone mmmm! could be a hassle here! left a message for the man who put the pump in not hopeful! Phoned the 'water dowser' who was helpful and gave me the name of another water company! Anyway went to bed awoke early, down to the village shop to get drinking water at least, had to go early as the crew were filming most of the p.m. at the junction!
Phoned the other water company they phoned back and were very helpful, Graham followed the advice given and it worked, thanks High Water Scotland for your help!
Had a lovely walk in the woods, played with Bella a wee sweetie, lots of good food and drink, and the reason I did not do my Blog last pm -I watched a movie with Kevin Spacey one of my favorite actors in it! great movie called K-Pax.
Up early this am had a big fry up then down to the beach Graham did a Time Lapse, Joe took photo's and Ruaridh and moi took Layla and Bella a walk to our favorite places on the beach. Ruaridh had a great time hunting for ? what and Bella loved jogging along in her baby papoose!
Going to make soda bread then Graham is going to do a veggie risotto and salad for dinner, followed by left over pear marscapone! Bye.

Movie

Tomorrow from 1100h until 1900h we will be closed off here in the Glen as they are filming! at the junction about a mile from the house. Gosh will be just like Shangrila! cut off in the mountains. Thank goodness the family are coming up this evening! we expect them around 1930h, looking forward to seeing them all.
The film crew appear to have taken over the village, the community field is being used to house all their equipment, and the roads are very busy for the sleepy Glens. Think the "Star" may have given us a wave it was a very limp gesture so guess it was him! or the director!
Our garden table and benches has arrived starting to assemble it but poor Graham has a very sore toe joint so we will see, as pressure on it makes it worse.
I have made an apple pie, and we are having pasta al forno for dinner. Apples ready for Bella!
Sunny and hot at the moment, fingers crossed we don't get too much rain.
Going to clean the bathroom and continue with the table. Bye.

Clean, clean, etc etc!

Had a frenzy of cleaning today as the family are arriving tomorrow for a weeks holiday! looking forward to seeing them all and hope they all get a good rest. Cleaned the bedrooms and halls upstairs and down, and down the stairs Phew! done now!
Up quite early had breakfast, then down to the beach to take Ruaridh a walk, he is quite reluctant to leave either one of us, so today we stayed together, I took one or two photo's and Graham did a time lapse of the foxgloves! There are so many of them on the beach and the colour is amazing!
Came home had lunch, then whilst Graham did the greenhouse and garden, I started the above cleaning!
Spoke on the phone to mum, she appears to be ok, though it has rained there all day!
Scrambled eggs on toast for dinner with a big mug of tea, great!
Going to have tea and then to bed. Goodnight!

Defence of the Realm!

Busy day today, up early hoping to have an early start to go shopping in Broadford, however it didn't quite turn out that way. Our new torch arrived from Drapers a free one for a dud one purchased in Portree, I had to make a telephone call to check whether our garden table and benches were on there way, that was a laugh a minute, however eventually found out they are. I decided to wash more couch covers and waited to hang them out to dry! Eventually we sat off!
First took Ruaridh for a walk in the woods on the way out, he decided to have a wee adventure but came when called after about five minutes.
Into Broadford got all our messages at the Co-op including some rolls and cheese for lunch, which we all enjoyed!
Back to Kyle to pick up more messages, then on to Jean and Luc's for afternoon tea. Ruaridh delighted as he got to play with Mara for an hour.
Whilst sat by the pond minding our own business a Tornado fighter plane flew over so low Graham got a picture and you could see the pilot. Jean and Luc pointed to a tree where the top was scorched last week by a low flying plane!! Last night they flew so low in the Glen even the swallows went crazy! Will be in touch with the MOD tomorrow.
Bought some hake from the fish man had it for dinner, roasted in the oven on a bed of onions, parsley and garlic with a pepper and saffron creamy sauce and Persian rice it was superb!
Just getting ready for bed. Goodnight.

Skye Express

This is a great delivery service that we make use of here in the Highlands! They deliver articles that we have ordered on the internet, also if we wish to have something delivered from a store in Inverness or the Isle of Skye for a nominal fee they will pick it up and bring it to us! Today we ordered a table and benches to go onto the deck and they should be here by Thursday! Great! today we got two 'airports' for the computers delivered and so on it goes.
Ruaridh calmed down somewhat on his rabbit chasing, we went down to the beach and on the way saw the van "Pampering Pets" grooming for dogs! run by Pam, she is being taught how to hand strip on the 25th June and The Monarch is to be the model!
Had another great walk whilst Graham and the wee fellow did a Time Lapse.
Home had lunch sat out on the deck, washed the covers and cushions on one of the settee's looks good.
Made bread, pancakes and Ruaridh's dog biscuits!
Graham made a lovely dinner creamy vegetable pie, mashed tatties and petit pois!
Just going to have a cup of tea then bed. Rain today! Goodnight.

Ruaridh caught a rabbit!

Up early with the best of intentions to go for a walk and then get work done in the garden! Just finished our breakfast when John H arrived. He stayed chatting for about two hours so it was much later when we set off for the beach! Ruaridh had a great morning in the garden, first he thought there was a rabbit under the deck so under he goes and yelps and growls, whether there is one who knows! However he did find one in a pipe over by the greenhouse, and this one he caught carrying it proudly onto the deck for us to admire!
Down to the beach Graham did a time lapse, and Ruaridh exhausted stayed with him whilst I went for a walk, it was very hot, sunny and peaceful. Did some photographs of beach debris.
Back home late lunch, made soda bread-lovely. Worked the greenhouse and sprayed plants that have greenfly with washing-up liquid! watered all the plants!
Pasta, tomato chilli sauce and salad for dinner made by Graham lovely. Very tired. Just going to wash up then to bed. Bye

Raw!

Today started to use my new camera shooting in Raw! I think it could be quite complicated, but none the less I need to know how to use it. Went down to the beach and I decided to find this piece of old rope which I had found yesterday, thought it would be a good photograph to start with. Did quite a few shots of the rope, Graham was doing a Time Lapse so Ruaridh came with me, he had a good time in the bushes at the beach, and a good run back to find Graham.
Weather was supposed to be hot and sunny, but turned out to be much cooler than yesterday. Back home had lunch then I did more weeding in the garden, then watered all the vegetables and flowers later on.
Graham made dinner lovely Minestrone soup with crispbreads, don't know if I will manage a sandwhich later on, very full. Spoke to Layla, mum and Anne today, on the telephone.
Listening to a play on Radio3 called "Black Watch" based on interviews with former soldiers who served in Iraq.
Also done some knitting. Bye.

Sunburn

Awoke to a clear blue sky and the outside temperature starting to soar. Had to go to the village shop to get the papers and eggs, also required a cylinder of propane gas to keep the midge machine going. After a shower and breakfast we set off, Ruaridh somewhat reluctant to get into the car fearing another long journey! after the shop we took the wee chap to the beach.
It was stunning the ocean was an amazing colour, turquoise, blue and purple! Lots of oystercatchers trying to get us away from their young or eggs by running around and screeching. Had lovely walk Ruaridh and moi had a paddle, as he was finding it too hot!
Back home got the deckchairs out on the deck and had lunch, sat reading the newspaper and managed to get my arms sunburnt! 'specially the left one. Made bread, watered some of the plants, Graham made dinner risotto frittata, salad and foccacia.
Watching a documentary on BBC4 "Laughing with Hitler" interesting!
Going to bed early. Bye.

Scorcher

Travelled back to the Glen today, left Old Reekie in mist and drizzle, travelled as far as Perth in this haze, when suddenly the sun broke through and the weather for the remainder of the journey was scorching! It was so hot we travelled with both windows open Ruaridh loved this. Stopped at our favorite spot on the Dalwhinnie/Spean Bridge road and had lunch lovely sandwiches and coffee. Took the wee fellow down to the canal which he enjoyed! Arrived in the Glen around 1700h all the vegetables appear to be ok and the flowers look gorgeous.
Had a pretty busy morning took Ruaridh to the woods he still was reluctant to go in, but since arriving in the Glen he has done nothing but chase rabbits!
Leek risotto, salad for dinner, catching up on blip. Just going to attack the dishes then to bed, after a cup of tea. Goodnight!

Busy day, mum was going back to St Annes on Sea in the Red Rose County so was up and about quite early! breakfast together, then I had a shower, got mum's lunch ready, ordered a cab and at 1145h on our way to the station to get the train. Layla was going to meet me for lunch but when I was at the station she telephoned to say the wee one Bella was spiking a temp! said once I had got mum away and got one or two messages I would be over to see them. Got what shopping I could then caught the bus over to Layla's. Bella looking somewhat subdued however when we left she was playing and wee smiles were appearing. Drove home quick sandwich then on the rode again to visit Graham's mum in Glasgow.
Had a good journey through, Graham's mum was pleased to see us and she seems to be ok. and the staff said she was fine. Spent about an hour with her then over to take some photographs at The Science Centre. Drive home good, quick meal scrambled eggs on toast and a cup of tea.
